How to measure for a suit

There are many resources on how to measure for a suit. However, do note that every tailor have different measurement standards.

BLAZER/SHIRT

1. Neck

Put the measuring tape around your neck right below your Adam’s apple. Put a finger between the neck and tape to ensure a comfortable fit.

2. Shoulder

It will be safer to wear a well fitted shirt for this. Measure from one shoulder seam to another. Do follow the contours of your shoulders instead of measuring straight across the shoulder.

For shirts, add 1cm for normal shoulders and add 2cm for slope shoulder.

3. Sleeves

It will be safer to wear a well fitted shirt for this. Measure from the seam of the shoulder to around 2cm below the wrist. Try to straighten the hand when measuring and to follow the contour of the hand. It will be safer to measure both sleeves in case one hand is longer than the other.

4. Armhole

The armhole is measured around the shoulder. The measuring tape should pass directly over the shoulder and be tight fit.

5. Bicep

The armhole is measured around the shoulder. The measuring tape should pass directly over the shoulder and be tight fit.

6. Forearm

Measure the thickest portion below the elbow (or forearm).

Reference pt: Measure from below elbow to the seam of the shoulder.

7. Wrist

Measure the circumference of your wrist

8. Chest

Take the chest measurement across the fullest part of your chest while keeping it level at the back. Stand in a relaxed upright position and breathe out when measuring

9. Waist

Measure the circumference of the smallest point usually between your chest and stomach. This is the most curved inwards part of your suit jacket or shirt, usually 6-8cm above belly button.

Measure the reference point: shortest distance from shoulder portion nearest to your collar to the waist.

10. Belly

Take the belly measurement at its fullest part, usually around the navel or belly button. Stand upright, relax and breathe out when measuring.

For guys with bigger bellies, do measure the front belly from the side to across the front belly to the other side.

11. Bum (Same as trousers)

Measure circumference of the biggest part of your butt area and make sure the measuring tape is parallel to the ground. Do not forget to empty your trousers pockets.

12. Length

Measure the highest part of your shoulder (next to shirt collar) to your desired measure (usually around wrist area). Do note that casual jackets are slightly shorter.

13. Across front

The front width is measured at chest level from the left hand side intersection of the arm and chest to the right hand side of the same intersection. Do keep your arms straight and close your body when being measured.

14. Across back

The back width is measured at chest level from the left hand side of the intersection of the arm and back to the right hand side of the same intersection. Do keep your arms straight and close to your body when being measured.

15. Neck to Spine

Measure from just below your collar to the lowest part of the lower back

TROUSERS

1. WAISTBAND

It is recommended you wear a pair of comfortable trousers and measure directly above the waistband.

2. HIPS

Measure about 5-7cm below your waistband. This should be between your butt and waistband measurement.

3. BUM

Measure around the fullest part of your rear. Do not forget to empty your trousers pockets.

4. CROTCH

Pass the measuring tape from the upper waistband at the back to measure the length of the crotch.

5. THIGH

Take measurement of the fullest part of the thigh right below the crotch. Make sure there is enough space for one finger between the tape and the thigh.

Reference point: Measure from directly above the waist band to the point of your fullest part of the thigh as seen in the other image.

6. LENGTH (TROUSERS)

Measure from the waistband to the bottom of the feet.
